Historical context:
The rijderschelling was a silver denomination valued at six stuivers and was named after the mounted knight depicted on the coin. In 1694, older full-value schellingen were officially countermarked with a bundle of arrows by order of the States General. The countermark distinguished these coins from later or unmarked schellingen whose official value was reduced to 5½ stuivers, giving rise to the contemporary name “zesthalf”. Overijssel rijderschellingen dated 1681 with this arrow-bundle countermark are documented.
