Val Saint Lambert Green Overlay Crystal Decanter & Tumbler — Hubert Fouarge, Pattern 3247/17
No reserve price
An exceptional antique decanter with matching tumbler by Val Saint Lambert, executed in the celebrated 3247/17 cutting pattern, designed by Hubert Fouarge. This distinctive hand-cut decoration is one of the most recognizable designs associated with Val Saint Lambert’s production during its golden age, demonstrating the remarkable technical skill of the manufactory’s master cutters.
Crafted in striking green overlay crystal, both pieces are entirely hand-cut with an elaborate combination of geometric facets, stars, lenses and finely cross-hatched details, revealing the brilliant clear crystal beneath the vivid green layer.
This particular green overlay is one of the rarer colour variations produced by Val Saint Lambert in this period and is considerably less frequently encountered than many of the more common overlay colours. Its vivid, almost luminous appearance beautifully emphasizes the depth and complexity of the cutting.
The set consists of a rounded decanter and its original matching tumbler, designed to sit inverted over the neck when not in use. This ingenious and elegant arrangement was traditionally intended for the bedside table, protecting the interior of the decanter while keeping the drinking glass immediately at hand.
The design is documented in original Val Saint Lambert catalogues from 1908 and 1926, confirming the pattern and its historical provenance. Catalogue images are included for reference.
The condition is exceptional, particularly considering its age of well over a century. Both the decanter and its matching tumbler have survived remarkably well, with the elaborate hand-cut decoration remaining crisp, brilliant and beautifully defined.
The combination of the rare green overlay colour, documented Hubert Fouarge design, remarkable state of preservation and considerable age makes this complete set especially desirable for collectors of early Val Saint Lambert crystal.
A superb collector’s piece combining one of the manufactory’s iconic cutting patterns, an unusually rare colour, documented provenance and the exceptional craftsmanship for which Val Saint Lambert became internationally celebrated.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
