Title Large antique Mater Misericordiae Virgin Mary statue – Polychrome plaster with metal halo – ca. 1920–1930 Description Impressive antique devotional statue representing the Virgin Mary as Mater Misericordiae – “Mother of Mercy”, dating approximately from the first decades of the 20th century. The statue is made of hollow moulded plaster and retains its original polychrome decoration in white, blue and gold tones. One of its most distinctive features is the large original openwork metal halo surrounding the Virgin’s head, bearing the inscription: “MATER MISERICORDIAE” The Virgin is represented standing with her arms gently extended, wearing a long white robe and a blue mantle decorated with gilded details. The statue measures approximately 80 cm high without the halo and around 90 cm including the halo. Weight: approximately 5.1 kg (5,100 g). Its large dimensions and imposing presence make it a particularly decorative example of early 20th-century European religious statuary. The construction, polychromy and style are consistent with the commercial religious statuary produced in France and neighbouring countries during the early decades of the 20th century. Research into period religious statuary catalogues has revealed models entitled “Mater Misericordiae”, including examples associated with the French religious statuary industry and the sculptor Louis Richomme (Frère Marie-Bernard). However, as no maker’s mark or signature has been found on this particular statue, no definitive attribution is claimed. Condition The statue is in authentic unrestored antique condition. There are visible losses and flaking to the original polychrome decoration, small chips and general signs of age, clearly visible in the photographs. Despite these signs of age, the statue remains remarkably complete: the face, hands, body and base are preserved, and the distinctive “MATER MISERICORDIAE” metal halo is still present. The statue has deliberately not been repainted or restored, preserving its original surface and antique character.
