壺 - Medievan Jacoba jug, 14th century - Rhine valley - 陶瓷
A stunning antique, medieval jug, made in the Rhine valley in the 14th century. A superb example, made of proto-stoneware, it has the typical form, often referred to as Jacoba jug. These sorts of jugs were called ‘Jacoba jugs’ because as early as the 17th century they were found in the moat of the hunting lodge of Teylingen, where the 15th-century Countess of Holland, Jacoba van Beieren, spent her final years. According to legend, she made the jugs herself to fight boredom.

Overall very good condition with loss from the edge of the foot, small losses consistent with age. and some deposits in the crevices. A stunning piece with a strong presence.
