ACCA XF, Southern Song Emperor Lizong - Duanping Tongbao, Folded Five, short and long coins from Changping, plain reverse, beautiful patina. Emperor Lizong of the Song Dynasty, Zhao Yun, was the 10th-generation descendant of Emperor Taizu and was adopted by Emperor Ningzong. After ascending the throne, Lizong allowed Shi Miyuan to wield power; he indulged in wine, women, and the pleasures of the harem. It was only after Shi Miyuan's death in 1233 that he began to personally govern. In the first year of Duanping (January 1234), the Southern Song allied with the Mongols to defeat the Jin dynasty. Later, taking advantage of the Mongol army's main force returning north, the Song launched attacks on the Mongols and nearly recaptured the former Northern Song capitals of Xijing, Dongjing, and Nanjing (today's Luoyang, Kaifeng, and Shangqiu in Henan Province) without much combat. However, they were soon driven out by the Mongol forces. In the second year of Duanping (1235), the Mongol Khagan Ögedei decided to march south to conquer the Song, thus beginning the Mongol-Song wars. The Duanping Tongbao was cast during Emperor Lizong Zhao Yun's Duanping era (1234–1236). According to "Inscriptions of the Song Dynasties," the coins exhibit stability and peace, with complete forms, beautiful inscriptions, pure copper quality, and a slight green patina. It is considered a fine coin among Southern Song coins. The inscriptions on the coin are arranged in a straight format, readable as-is, with a plain reverse.
