A cast bronze pendant of triangular form with pierced openwork and decorative ribbing, known as a dragon’s foot pendant. The piece is defined by its three projecting “toes” at the base, representing the stylised claw or foot of a mythical beast. The pendant shows surface decoration, adding texture and emphasizing the claw-like form.
In Norse mythology, Fáfnir (Old Norse and Icelandic) or Frænir is a son of the dwarf king Hreidmar and brother of Regin , Ótr, Lyngheiðr and Lofnheiðr. After being affected by the curse of Andvaris ring and gold, Fafnir became a dragon and was slain by the brave hero Sigurd. The wearable reminder of this myth would have inspired bravery in Viking warriors.
A modern necklace is included.
