Untitled (Boxer) / 1982 by Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (New York, December 22, 1960-ibidem, August 12, 1988) also known as SAMO, was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent.
In Basquiat's short but intense pictorial activity, three stages can be distinguished:
From 1980 to 1982, a time when sign graffiti mixed with street visions and symbolic forms of primitive cultural traditions, such as masks, skeletons and skulls.
From 1982 to 1985, with works populated by word-concepts, voodoo, totemic and archaizing images, portrait-homages to black heroes - jazz musicians, writers, basketball players, boxers - and references to American consumer society.
From 1986 to 1988, a period with paintings increasingly sophisticated in their contents and in their complex pictorial figuration, resolved with multiple and fragmentary quotations from primitive or ancient cultures (African, Aztec, Egyptian, Greco-Roman, etc.), but also from the European pictorial tradition.
As he himself stated on more than one occasion, his work was closer to painting, a painting halfway between gestural and warm abstraction and post-pop figuration than to graffiti ("My work has nothing to do with graffiti. It is part of painting. I have always painted.").
