A wooden kanban 看板 (shop sign) advertising a local confection with an attractive rustic appeal.
Made of solid Keyaki (Zelkova) wood, of elongated rectangular form with lobed corners, the surface carved with inscriptions filled in black lacquer. The text reads:
“Regional specialities” 各産, “Kanbaku” 寒瀑 (Cold Waterfall), and “Sachi-no-I Mochi” さち乃井餅 (brand of rice cakes).
Period: Japan – Late Meiji / Taishô period (early 20th century).
Dimensions:
Height 164 cm, Width 29.5 cm, Depth 2.3 cm.
In good original condition, with traces of wear and weathering consistent with outdoor display and age, like old traces of ivy. The sign is somewhat warped, shows old traces of woodworm, and has been professionally treated against insects. Please refer to the photos for a clear condition reference.
