A Set of Four George III Sterling Silver Candlesticks Each of elegant Corinthian column form, raised on a stepped square base richly decorated with acanthus leaf corners and gadroon borders. Two of the candlesticks are finely engraved with a family crest depicting a hawk, both to the base and to the detachable sconces. These handsome examples exemplify the neoclassical taste of the George III period, their refined proportions and crisp ornamentation reflecting the highest quality of late-18th-century English silversmithing. Complete sets of four from this period are scarce, particularly in such fine condition and with original removable nozzles. Made in London, 1770–1772 (255 - 253 years old) Made by John Parker I & Edward Wakelin / John Carter II / William Collings Fully English hallmarked for sterling 925 silver. Interesting detail regarding the makers mark: in particular there is evidence that John Carter II (who specialised in candlesticks and salvers) was working before 1770.
