Known for her unique "Nerikomi" (agateware/marbling) technique, Wakasugi departed from traditional rustic Mashiko styles to create modern, colourful, and craft-oriented works. According to her biography, Wakasugi used a specific blend of clays—mixing Kyoto porcelain clay with Shigaraki clay—to create semi-porcelain (Hanjiki). This allowed her to achieve the vibrant colours of porcelain while retaining the warmth of pottery. These four pieces are designed to resemble organic stones or pebbles found in nature. Each box features a distinct colour palette—ranging from soft pastels to cool blues and earthy browns—created by kneading together different coloured clays. The interiors reveal the beautiful, strata-like patterns inherent to the Nerikomi technique, glazed to a glossy finish. These small boxes can be used as incense containers (Kogo), jewellery boxes, or simply displayed as sculptural objects. Wakasugi Naom (若杉直美): Born in Tokyo in 1948, she studied at the Tokyo University of the Arts. She moved to Mashiko in 1978 with her husband, Shu Wakasugi. Unlike the traditional Mingei style often associated with Mashiko, her work was characterized by a bright, pop-art sensibility and the intricate use of coloured clay (Nerikomi). She passed away in 2011, making her works increasingly collectible. Each of the three boxes comes with its own original signed wooden box (Tomobako). The lids of the wooden boxes are inscribed with "Nerikomi Kobako" (Marbled Small Box) and signed/sealed by the artist. Each piece is impressed with the artist's mark on the bottom. Very good condition with minimal wear. Please verify the condition with the photos. Dimensions: approx. H 4-4.3 cm W 5.6-5.7 cm D 5.4-6.2 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos.
