The right-hand inscription claims that this remedy could relieve violent stomach pains and related ailments with just one dose. On the left side are the shop details: “Kinryutō (金龍湯), original shop (元店),” together with the address “Edo Tori Hongokuchō 3-chome (江戸通本石町三丁目角),” and the shop name Karakiya Rokubei (唐木屋六兵衛). This reflects the lively commercial atmosphere of the Edo period, particularly in the pharmacy district around Nihonbashi. The reverse side reveals the sign’s later reuse. The inscription “Funaoka Sunday School (船岡日曜学校)” indicates that, after the pharmacy closed or no longer needed the board, it was repurposed by a Christian organisation for their Sunday school. The pre-1868 address “Edo Tori Hongokuchō” is historically valuable, as it preserves the name before the city was renamed Tokyo. Traditional pharmacy signboards were usually hung under the shop eaves or inside the entrance where they were protected from rain, which is why this sign has survived in good condition despite its age. The black lacquered border identifies it as a “kin-kanban” (prestige signboard), suggesting that it served as an important commercial advertisement. The sign shows wear consistent with its age and history, including rubbing, scratches, and natural weathering on the wooden surface, flaking and abrasion to the black lacquered edges, and old wormholes and losses—particularly around the ends—which enhance its wabi-sabi character. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx. H 72.7 cm W 25.8 cm D 1.9 cm ・Please make sure to review all the provided information and images before placing your bid. ・We make every effort to accurately represent the product's colors and textures in our photos. However, due to differences in monitors and device displays, as well as photographic conditions, slight color variations between the photos and the actual product may occur. We ask for your understanding in advance. Thank you for your interest, and happy bidding!
