Ukiyo-e Sumō-e (相扑絵) - Utagawa Kunisada (1785-1865) - Published by Uchi - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Work Title: Ukiyo-e Sumō-e (相扑絵) Artist: Utagawa Kunisada I (歌川国貞,1786–1864) Technique: Woodblock PrintSignature: Artist’s signature on the block Sheet Dimensions: 20.8 × 43.3 cm (8.2 × 17.0 in) Mounting Board Dimensions: 39 × 55 cm (15.4 × 21.7 in) Paper Material: Washi (和紙) Publisher: Uchigura Edition (内里版) This exquisite nishiki-e (锦絵) woodblock print is a reproduction of Sumō-e (相扑絵), originally created in 1857 (the 4th year of the Ansei era) by Utagawa Kunisada I (歌川国貞), a preeminent ukiyo-e master of the late Edo period in Japan. This version was reprinted and distributed by the Uchigura Edition (内里版) in the 1960s–1970s, with the publisher’s mark visible on the edge of the print. The composition depicts two sumō wrestlers competing in the dohyō (土俵,sumō ring): the wrestler on the left is named Onimenyama (鬼面山) and the one on the right Shiranui (不知火), with their names inscribed on the red vertical plaques in the scene. Flanking the ring are the referee (Shikimori Inosuke) and the judging official (Tamagaki), both dressed in the costumes of the Edo period samurai and nobility, faithfully recreating the authentic atmosphere of a sumō match in that era. Characterized by exaggerated muscular lines and striking color contrasts to highlight the wrestlers’ strength, this work embodies the quintessential style of ukiyo-e Sumō-e (相扑絵)—it not only documents a competitive folk spectacle but also boasts decorative appeal and popular entertainment value. The print is mounted on a backing board. Minor water stains are visible on the right side of the board. Due to age, the print paper shows signs of slight natural yellowing from oxidation. Overall condition is good. - The picture is part of the description. The color of the item may be slightly different from the picture (due to camera and screen settings). - The successful bidder will be responsible for any customs duties and taxes (if applicable). - This item will be mailed by the postal service of Taiwan in the form of airmail with insurance attached.
