This finely hand-painted Russian lacquer box originates from Palekh, one of the most renowned centres of traditional Russian miniature lacquer art. The scene depicted is a poetic genre composition rather than a fairy tale: a young woman holding a basket of berries, surrounded by birds and lush forest vegetation. The calm expression, refined detailing and harmonious colour palette are characteristic of late 20th-century Palekh painting. The title is written in Cyrillic along the lower rim and reads «Девушка с ягодами», which translates as “Girl with berries”. The box is also clearly signed in Cyrillic “Палех. Суров С.”, indicating both the place of origin (Palekh) and the artist S. Surov. The signature is small but legible and consistent with authentic Palekh workshop practices.
