Gion (祇園) - Ido Masao 井堂雅夫 (1945-2016) - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Item Description: This captivating woodblock print is by Masao Ido (井堂雅夫), a renowned Japanese artist celebrated for his vibrant landscapes and traditional street scenes. Titled "Kyoto Hyakkei – Rakutō Jikkei – Gion" (京都百景・洛東十景・祇園), this piece is part of the “One Hundred Views of Kyoto” series, focusing on the eastern Kyoto district of Gion. The scene showcases the iconic atmosphere of Gion, with traditional wooden townhouses, a red lantern bearing the characters “Miyako Odori” (都をどり), and elegantly dressed women in kimono, evoking the refined geisha culture of the area. The composition masterfully balances tradition and modernity, blending architectural beauty with human presence. The color gradients and clean lines are signature elements of Ido’s postwar Shin-hanga style. This is a limited edition print, bearing the publisher’s and artist’s seals, and exemplifies the quiet elegance of Kyoto's historical streets. Artist's Comment: Gion The intersection of Hanamikoji and Shijo Streets, situated between Yamato-oji and Higashioji Streets, forms the heart of Gion. I chose this spot for my sketch, wishing to capture the essence of Gion. In the foreground right, I depicted lanterns for the Miyako Odori dance festival. Sunlight casts shadows upon the lanterns. Facing Hanamikoji Street ahead stands Ichiriki Chaya. Its imposing presence seems to proudly represent Gion Town itself. Its distinctive red-painted earthen walls are beautiful. The atmosphere created by the maiko and geiko passing by conveys to me the unique charm of Gion's hanamachi. Size: Approximately 36 cm × 26 cm Artist Profile: Masao Ido (井堂雅夫, 1945–2016) was a prominent Japanese woodblock printmaker associated with the modern Shin-hanga movement. Born in Manchuria and raised in Kyoto, Ido studied under Koho Ishii and became known for his serene and nostalgic depictions of Japanese towns, temples, and rural scenes. His work emphasizes harmony, traditional architecture, and the beauty of seasonal changes, using subtle color gradations and clean compositions. Ido’s prints are highly collectible and have been exhibited internationally, earning him recognition as a cultural ambassador for Japanese aesthetics. **PLEASE NOTE** Shipping Information: Items are shipped from Japan.
