Julien Stappers (1875–1960) - Mediterranean Harbour Scene

Mediterranean harbour scene by Julien Stappers (1875–1960), depicting a lively coastal village with fishing boats, pastel-coloured buildings and a warm southern atmosphere. The painting is executed in oil on canvas, mounted on panel, and is signed “Stappers” in the lower right corner. The work shows Stappers’ characteristic impasto technique and luminous colour palette, typical of his mid-20th-century harbour and Mediterranean scenes inspired by travels to Italy and the south of France. Julien Stappers was a Belgian painter trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Higher Institute of Fine Arts. He exhibited extensively in Belgium, including in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent and Liège, and his works continue to appear regularly at auction. Julien Stappers made his exhibition debut in 1898 at the Salon of Namur (Halle du Kursaal Dimeus). Throughout his career, he exhibited regularly in important Belgian galleries and art circles. His work was shown multiple times at Galerie Rubens in Brussels (1957, 1959, 1960), Galerie Le Studio in Brussels (1949, 1950, 1951), and at the Cercle des Beaux-Arts in Liège (1950). He also participated in exhibitions during the Hoeilaart Grape Festivals in 1951 and 1956, and exhibited repeatedly at Galerie Jordaens in Ghent (1950, 1951, 1957, 1959, 1960). Stappers became widely appreciated for his sunlit colour palette, particularly in city views and southern landscapes and still lifes. Technique: Oil on canvas (mounted on panel)
