Francis Bacon - Sylva Sylvarum (Collection of Collections) - 1648

1648 FIRST DUTCH EDITION, two books in one volume with Sylva Sylvarum and New Atlantis by Francis Bacon (1561–1626), an English philosopher and statesman who served as Lord Chancellor of England under King James I. This book is regarded as one of the most important writings by Bacon and is seen as an effort by Bacon to build the new science. It contains 1000 experiments grouped in 10 groups of 10 centuries, which originally came from Aristotle, Galileo, Della Porta, Pliny, Scaliger, Ficino, Telesio, Cardano, Sandys etc... and were substantially rewritten by Bacon. Original binding from the period, in excellent condition, as shown in the photos. In this book, Sylva Sylvarum (Collection of Collections or The Wood of the Forest), Bacon uses very simple, direct, concrete language and invites the reader to undertake with him a series of experiments, physical phenomena and observations in natural history that demonstrate the correctness of hundreds of scientific principles (motion, fire, heat and cold, colour of bird feathers, rhubarb, spirits and essences, trees, disease, opium, salamanders, medical treatments for the prolongation of life…etc). His thought had a strong influence on the construction of a more open society and he is remembered as one of the fathers of empiricism. The second title/work "New Atlantis or Novus Atlas" attached at the end is one of Bacon's most popular works and has inspired numerous scientific organizations. The first edition was published posthumously in London in 1626 by his personal secretary, William Rawley. This Leiden edition of 1648, is the first edition printed in the Netherlands.
