Vest-Centralafrika (Nigeria–Kamerun-området). Heavy Bronze Bracelet Currency (Ring Money) - Segmented construction with a central hinge - 19th Century (Ingen mindstepris)

West–Central Africa (Nigeria–Cameroon region) – Heavy Bronze Bracelet Currency (Ring Money) – 19th Century ________________________________________ Description Rare and impressive heavy bronze bracelet currency from West–Central Africa, originating from the Nigeria–Cameroon region. This object belongs to the category of arm ring money, a traditional form of pre-colonial currency used as a store of value, ceremonial payment and bridewealth. The bracelet is massive and open, with a diameter of approximately 11 cm and a substantial weight of 765 grams. It is cast in a copper alloy and features a segmented construction with a central hinge, allowing limited movement but clearly not intended for comfortable wear. The surface is decorated with engraved geometric bands and stamped circular “eye” motifs, characteristic of West–Central African metal currencies. The flattened terminal ends are functional rather than decorative and distinguish this object clearly from jewellery. Several small drilled holes are present, indicating later ritual use or suspension, a common secondary function for obsolete currency objects in the 19th and early 20th century. Objects of this type are documented in classic ethnographic literature, including Opitz, Odd & Curious Money, as well as museum collections of African monetary systems. They represent an important transitional form between wearable arm rings and fully symbolic metal currency. The bracelet shows authentic age wear, patina and surface irregularities, consistent with prolonged circulation and ritual handling. No modern alterations or tourist-market features are observed. ________________________________________ Details • Material: Bronze / copper alloy • Weight: 765 g • Diameter: approx. 110 mm • Form: Open bracelet currency (arm ring money) • Construction: Segmented with hinge • Region: West–Central Africa (Nigeria–Cameroon region) • Function: Currency / bridewealth / ceremonial payment • Period: 19th century
