Meiji Tsuho 明治通宝 The first paper currency created in the Meiji era following the Edo period
◆Meiji Tsuho 10 Sen Note
明治通宝10銭券
Size: 5.3×8.7 cm
Following the currency reforms of the Meiji Restoration, the minting and circulation of new coins began in Meiji 3 (1870). However, paper money remained diverse, including government-issued notes, regional (prefectural) notes, notes issued by exchange companies, and even feudal domain notes from the Edo period. These notes were often haphazardly produced, easy to counterfeit, and counterfeiting was rampant. Therefore, the government decided to consolidate the old banknotes and issue new, sophisticated banknotes that were difficult to counterfeit, befitting the new era of the Meiji Restoration. These were manufactured in Germany, and the technology was later transferred to Japan.
These are very old banknotes dating back over 150 years. Please understand that they are significantly damaged as a result. We will carefully wrap them and ship them out.
Carefully packaged and shipped from Japan to overseas.
We have other rare items up for current auction. Please check them out.
