Medieval Bronze Signet Ring – AD 1000 to 1400 – 22x20 mm – 8.94 g
This solid bronze signet ring features an engraved bezel bearing an abstract or monogrammatic design, possibly used for personal identification or sealing documents. The bezel is thick and irregular in form, showing traces of wear and distortion consistent with centuries of burial and use. The design, although partially worn, still exhibits linear incisions that may correspond to initials or a stylised symbol.
The inner circumference measures 20 mm, indicating it was likely worn by a man of status. The robust construction and thick band suggest it may have been a functional item rather than merely ornamental, a characteristic feature of medieval rings used in both legal and personal matters.
• Material: Bronze
• Dimensions: 22 × 20 mm
• Weight: 8.94 g
• Date: ca. AD 1000–1400
• Condition: Very good condition, with smooth patina, wear to the bezel, and minor deformation to the band
A compelling example of medieval personal adornment and utility, reflecting the socio-legal practices of the High to Late Middle Ages.
Provenance: Acquired from an auction house in 2025, previously owned by a collector from the South of Germany, acquired in the 1980s.
