This is a fine gold maki-e hair accessory set from the Meiji to early Showa period, representing classic Japanese women’s traditional hair ornaments.
Both the comb and hairpin are decorated on both sides with Taka-Makie (high-relief maki-e). The base is deep red lacquer, with chrysanthemum patterns detailed in gold and black. The matching designs create an elegant and refined appearance.
Gold maki-e was a luxury technique of the era. These sets were worn by samurai and middle-class women, embodying the refinement of traditional Japanese lacquer art, as well as the aesthetic taste and social status of the wearer.
Condition:
The set shows natural age and minor wear. One tooth at the tip of the comb is broken; no other obvious scratches or cracks.
The original red box has yellowing, minor spots, and light damage.
Overall in good condition.

This set features a combination of multiple decorative techniques, with one comb and two distinct hairpins.
The comb is decorated on both sides with inlay + Kinji maki-e: white petals in mother-of-pearl, red floral accents in resin, and gold powder for veins and stems.
One hairpin is carved in three-dimensional fan and foliage design, accented with small red bead stamens.
The other uses double-sided Shippō-yaki (cloisonné enamel) inlay, with raised patterns and soft, rich colours.
Made mainly of celluloid with mixed decorative materials, the set balances beauty and durability. The traditional floral motifs are consistent throughout, expressing elegant Japanese aesthetics.
Condition:
The set shows natural age and wear. Some inlay on the comb has peeled; no other noticeable scratches or cracks. No repairs.The original base has no lid.Good condition.
