Literary Gathering (文事雅聚図) - Katsushige (勝重) - Japan (Ingen mindstepris)

Title: Literary Gathering (文事雅聚図) Artist: Katsushige (勝重) Medium: Original hand-painted ink and color on silk Seal: Artist’s red seal Dimensions: 76.2 × 41.7 cm (30 × 16.4 in) Period: Taishō to early Shōwa era (c. 1912–1930), Japan This is an original hand-painted silk work created by the Japanese artist Katsushige (勝重) during the Taishō to early Shōwa period (c. 1912–1930). The painting depicts a refined literary gathering among the chōnin (townspeople) class of the Edo period, capturing three figures immersed in the pleasures of calligraphy and literature. At the top, a man in a black kimono with white patterns holds a long scroll, reading intently. In the center, a figure sits relaxed on a black lacquer stand, holding a sheet of paper. At the bottom, a woman in a striking red-and-black patterned kimono focuses on brush calligraphy, with scattered sheets of paper and a lacquered suzuribako (inkstone box) beside her. The figures’ faces follow the classic Ukiyo-e style of white makeup and delicate eyebrows, while the kimono patterns are rendered in rich, detailed colors, blending realism with artistic expression. With fluid brushwork and elegant coloring, the work vividly recreates the intellectual life of the Edo period, making it a valuable artifact for the study of modern Japanese genre painting and aesthetic craftsmanship. The artist’s red circular seal, “Katsushige (勝重),” is stamped at the bottom left. Executed on silk (a woven silk textile), the piece uses mineral pigments (azurite, malachite, cinnabar, etc.) and gold leaf/powder, resulting in colors that are deep, warm, and enduring, resistant to fading over time. The work shows traces of previous mounting. With age, it displays natural signs of oxidation, discoloration, and minor creases, but remains in good overall condition. This artwork is sold unframed; the images merely show the effect after mounting and framing. Note: Delivery to Italy takes approximately 6–7 days.
