Victor Vasarely (1906-1997) - Cheyt-Ond, 1970
Victor Vasarely. Cheyt-Ond, 1970.
Victor Vasarely, widely regarded as the father of Op Art, was one of the most influential figures of 20th-century abstract art. His research into visual perception, color, and geometry transformed the relationship between viewer and image, creating compositions capable of producing movement, depth, and vibration through precise mathematical structures.

Dry stamp of the Vasarely Foundation.
Photolithography on gloss paper.
Total dimensions: 27 x 27 cm.
Fine condition.
In Cheyt-Ond (1970), Vasarely constructs a complex spatial illusion using a grid of cubic modules arranged in a progressive deformation that seems to bend the pictorial surface inward. The chromatic transition from warm yellows and oranges to colder greys and whites enhances the sensation of depth, while the strict geometric repetition creates a hypnotic optical vibration characteristic of the artist’s mature Op Art period.
Rather than depicting volume, Vasarely generates it mathematically. The image behaves like a visual algorithm in which simple elements are combined according to precise rules, producing a dynamic structure that appears to move as the viewer’s eye travels across the surface. This method reflects the artist’s ambition to create a universal visual language based on modular systems and reproducible forms.
The work belongs to the period in which Vasarely fully developed his concept of programmed art, anticipating later connections between art, architecture, and digital image construction. His influence extended far beyond painting, shaping graphic design, kinetic art, and contemporary visual culture.
