Vikingetiden Bronze Amulet med tre andefødder - 47 mm (Ingen mindstepris)
A fine and uncommon example of Viking Age craftsmanship, featuring zoomorphic detail and distinctive duck-foot pendants, highly desirable for collectors of early medieval antiquities.
Condition: Good archaeological condition; complete with all pendants intact. Surface wear and patina consistent with age.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: Height 47 mm; Width 27 mm
Date: Viking Age, circa 9th–11th century AD
The pendant consists of a distinctive trilobed upper plate with stylised zoomorphic terminals. The outer lobes appear to form abstract animal heads—possibly horses —rendered in a simplified manner typical of Viking art. Such animal-head motifs are characteristic of early medieval Scandinavian design and may have held symbolic or protective meaning. Beneath the plate are three integral suspension loops, each holding a freely moving pendant.
These pendants are formed as stylised duck feet, a well-recognised motif in Viking Age metalwork. These bird-related elements may carry symbolic associations with water, travel, or fertility, and are occasionally encountered on equestrian fittings and dress ornaments. Their articulated construction would have created subtle movement and possibly a faint jingling sound when worn, enhancing the visual and sensory impact of the piece.
The object displays a well-developed green patina consistent with age and burial, with minor surface wear and corrosion typical for excavated bronze artefacts of this period. The overall form remains intact and stable, with all three pendants preserved and articulated.
