This self portrait is the first in a series of figurative paintings where I explore a new expressionist style. I'm moving towards a faster way of painting, driven more by emotion than technique. The compact dimensions of this portrait allow me to focus all my creative energy into a single session.

The colors are inspired by the subject and the emotions they evoke in me. I use my entire palette, sometimes choosing colors unconsciously. I feel my classical training informs these paintings; the brushstrokes release all the colors I carefully displayed before, now mixed together.
