Beskrivelse fra sælger
Medieval Bronze Signet Ring with Geometric Lozenge Motif – Circa 12th–14th Century AD - Top Condition
Description:
An authentic medieval bronze signet ring featuring a broad, slightly raised rectangular bezel engraved with a central lozenge (diamond-shaped) motif.
The bezel is decorated with a simple but deliberate geometric design consisting of a recessed diamond framed within a lightly incised border. The engraving is shallow and worn, consistent with prolonged use, possibly as a personal signet or symbolic device.
The shoulders of the ring taper from the bezel and are ornamented with incised linear grooves and stepped ridges, adding subtle architectural character to the design. The hoop is sturdy, rounded externally, and slightly flattened internally, typical of cast medieval rings intended for daily wear.
The overall form, decoration, and construction are consistent with medieval European signet rings, particularly those of the Crusader period or broadly High Medieval era, where geometric and non-heraldic motifs were commonly used by individuals of modest status or where heraldic systems were not yet fully formalized.
Specifications:
Material: Bronze
Culture: Medieval Europe (possibly Crusader-period context)
Date: Circa 12th–14th century AD
Weight: 4.97 g
Ring Size:
Approx. US 9–9.5
Approx. EU 60–61
Inner diameter: 19.3 mm
Bezel type: Raised rectangular / slightly trapezoidal plate
Decoration: Incised lozenge (diamond) motif with linear shoulder ornament
Historical Context:
During the medieval period, rings served not only as adornment but also as markers of identity, authority, and personal symbolism. Signet rings in particular were used to seal documents in wax, bearing simple engraved devices that acted as personal emblems.
While elaborate heraldic rings became more common among the nobility, many individuals wore rings with geometric or abstract motifs, such as lozenges, crosses, and linear designs. These could function as:
Personal marks or proto-signatures
Decorative symbols with possible protective or symbolic meaning
Practical sealing devices
The lozenge motif seen here is a common medieval geometric form and may have held symbolic or purely decorative significance.
Condition:
Very good ancient condition
Stable dark brown to black patina
Engraving visible though softened by wear
Surface wear and smoothing consistent with long-term use
Minor abrasions and edge wear on bezel and hoop
No visible modern repairs
Please refer carefully to the photographs for full condition details.
Provenance:
Acquired from a private European collection, established in the late 1980s. A provenance document and declaration of legal origin can be provided in PDF format upon request.
Rings of this type are frequently associated with the Crusader-era cultural sphere, though precise attribution remains stylistic.
