“Wave”
Mixed Media on Canvas (Acrylic, Tempera, Oil, Spray Paint, Charcoal, Oil Pastel, Varnish)
The artwork “Wave” is an abstract interpretation of the themes of the sea, displacement, and collective memory. During the painting process, references to significant works from art history dealing with the ocean and human tragedy — such as The Raft of the Medusa — were combined with contemporary visual associations of the modern refugee crisis. Figurative and realistic elements initially emerged throughout the composition, evoking scenes of survival, movement, and catastrophe.
These motifs were subsequently disrupted through aggressive and intuitive layers of paint, obscuring and dissolving the narrative imagery until only fragments remained visible. It is as if a wave of color has swept across the canvas, transforming dramatic representation into abstraction. The remaining traces oscillate between recognition and disappearance, allowing the work to function as a dynamic interpretation of the subject rather than a direct depiction. In this way, “Wave” continues to engage with themes of migration, instability, and the emotional force of the sea while resisting fixed imagery or singular narrative.

Note: The painting will be shipped rolled in a tube without wooden frame.

Disclaimer:
The surface of the artwork has been intentionally worked in a raw and highly physical manner in accordance with its subject matter. Layers of paint partially protrude three-dimensionally from the canvas, while charcoal traces and smudged marks remain visible throughout the composition. These blurred and displaced elements are an intentional part of the artistic process and have been fixed with varnish in order to preserve precisely this moment of dissolution and movement. They are not damages or conservation issues, but deliberate material characteristics of the work.
