Tsugaru is located in western Aomori Prefecture, Japan, and is known for its harsh winters, distinctive dialect, and deeply rooted folk culture.

Ichiro Kojima (1924–1964) was a legendary photographer born in Aomori Prefecture who continued to capture the landscapes of his homeland, Tsugaru.
His career as a photographer spanned only about ten years, from the early 1950s until his death in 1964 at the age of just 39.
However, during that brief period, he left an indelible mark on the history of Japanese photography.

The only photo book Kojima published during his lifetime was "Poetry, Writings, Photography TSUGARU" (1963), and this edition is a limited reprint of just 1,000 copies released in 2014.
The book includes a number in the credits indicating its position in a print run of 1,000 copies.

It features essays by Yojiro Ishizaka, a leading novelist from Aomori, and Kyozo Takagi.
Created together with them, this masterpiece vividly portrays the atmosphere and spirit of their native land.
The cover features a woodblock print by Junichiro Sekino, a woodblock print artist from Aomori, faithfully recreating the atmosphere of the first edition.

This reprint comes with a new English leaflet.

I once had the opportunity to view Mr. Kojima’s works at the Aomori Museum of Art.
They were truly magnificent pieces, and I was deeply moved.
