Paraguay – 1 Real 1865 – Pick 18a –
Country: Paraguay
Issue Type: Regular Issue / Treasury Note
Year/Date: 1865 (Law of 1865 / Year 25 of Independence Design)
Denomination: Un Real (1 Real)
Pick Catalog Number: P-18a
Serial Number: N. 70662
Printing Authority: El Tesoro Nacional (National Treasury)
Grading House: Uncertified (Raw banknote)
Designation: Signed by Florencio Alfaro
Up for auction is a fascinating, historically significant 1865 1 Real Treasury banknote issued by El Tesoro Nacional in Paraguay. This early South American paper currency piece dates back to the highly turbulent period of the Paraguayan War (War of the Triple Alliance), making surviving paper issues from this era exceedingly scarce and widely sought after by collectors of wartime and emergency history. This lot offers a complete view of both the obverse and reverse sides, allowing for absolute verification of its state of preservation.
Obverse: Features a distinctive black intaglio ink printing framed by a decorative geometric border. The upper left area showcases an early regional allegory depicting a standing native warrior figure, while the upper centre features the circular Paraguayan national emblem enclosing a star and olive branches flanked by stylized numbers. The central legal tender text reads "El Tesoro Nacional pagará al portador la cantidad de UN REAL valor recibido", underscored by the printed signature of official Florencio Alfaro. The vertical borders are stamped with the text "UN REAL", and the serial number N. 70662 is written in red-brown ink in the upper right.
Reverse: Displays a completely unprinted, blank reverse side, which is standard and authentic for this primitive 1865 national treasury emergency printing series. The plain paper backing clearly exhibits natural age-related toning, heavy circulation handling, and prominent vertical folding creases consistent with a note that actively served the early economy of Paraguay.
Grade: The banknote is in Good to Very Good (G-VG) condition. It shows considerable signs of wear, including multiple deep folds, surface creasing, soft corners, minor edge splits, and significant brownish staining on the lower-right quadrant, yet the key historical text, serial numbers, and central design details remain fully legible and intact. Please see images as these form part of the grade/condition report
A true investment-quality acquisition for collectors specialising in 19th-century South American banknotes, military-era currency, or early Paraguayan national treasury issues.
