The image is from an original Linocut entitled “Portrait of Woman wearing a hat with Pompons and a printed Dress” done in 1962.
This piece belongs to Picasso’s late period, characterized by bold colors, simplified forms, and a return to expressive, almost childlike lines. The face is split into contrasting color zones, a continuation of his long exploration of Cubism, where multiple perspectives are shown simultaneously.
The handwritten note visible on your print reads:
“Pour Sabaté / son ami Picasso”
(“For Sabaté, his friend Picasso”)
This refers to Jaume Sabartés, a close friend, secretary, and biographer of Picasso. Dedications like this were often reproduced in authorized prints as a tribute to their relationship.
Picasso and Sabartés had been friends since their youth in Barcelona. Sabartés later became Picasso’s personal secretary and played a crucial role in organizing his archives. In fact, the Museu Picasso in Barcelona was largely created thanks to Sabartés, who donated his collection of Picasso’s works to the city in 1963—something Picasso himself could not do directly for political reasons at the time.
