Where Reason Ends is a contemporary artwork about solitude, the unconscious mind, and the border where thought gives way to silence.

A solitary figure crosses a vast black desert. The head is a moon, pale and airless. The shadows stretch further than physics allows. Stones drift without falling. This is not a place. It is a state. A landscape built entirely from what the mind carries when it walks alone.

The image does not arrive through paint or print. It emerges through controlled surface damage on acrylic glass. No pigment is added. No ink is laid down. Only the surface is altered, and through that alteration, the figure appears. As light shifts across the acrylic glass, the scene moves between visibility and near disappearance, between presence and the edge of nothing.

From a distance, the work reads as a single cinematic frame, composed with the stillness of a museum painting. Step closer, and the surface reveals itself as a field of controlled scratches, each one holding light at a different angle, each one part of a structure that only makes sense as a whole.

The Dalí echo is not ornament. It is logic. The floating stones and impossible shadows are the grammar of a mind past reason, past language, past the comfort of explanation. The figure does not stop. It walks. And that quiet forward motion carries more psychological weight than any confrontation could.

This work continues the Art with Scratch series by Tijs Dragtsma, in which imagery is constructed through controlled surface damage rather than pigment or print. A visual language where damage is not destruction, but structure.

About Art with Scratch

Art with Scratch is a body of work in which the image is not drawn, but released. Carved line by line into a deep black surface, each work emerges through countless precise scratches that catch the light and bring form out of darkness.

From a distance, the image appears almost photographic. Powerful, recognisable and full of presence. Yet up close, the work dissolves into thousands of individual marks. Fine, fragile and almost weightless. What seemed solid reveals itself as a delicate web of lines, each one a deliberate gesture, each one essential to the whole.

Light is what gives this work its life. The black surface absorbs, while the scratched lines reflect. As light shifts across the surface, the image breathes. From one angle the figure stands clear and defined. From another it softens, recedes, almost disappears into the darkness from which it came. Under a focused spotlight, the contrast deepens and the image takes on a sculptural, almost luminous quality.

What makes this medium so compelling is its quiet tension. The act of scratching is direct and irreversible. Every line is a decision that cannot be undone. Yet the result is not harsh. It is intimate, atmospheric and alive with movement. Hardness becomes softness. Destruction becomes creation. Absence becomes presence.

In works such as this portrait, the figure is never fully fixed. Through the interplay of line, light and shadow, the image shifts with perspective and atmosphere. At certain moments, the subject seems to step forward out of the black. At others, it retreats, leaving only a whisper of form. It is within that movement, between visibility and disappearance, that the work comes alive.

Like all materials touched by time, the surface carries its own quiet life. Each scratch holds a moment, a breath, a gesture. Together they form not just an image, but a presence, one that continues to reveal itself with every change of light.

Som kunstner drives jeg af et konstant ønske om at udforske nye visuelle sprog. Jeg ser ikke kunst som en fast stil, men som et udviklende opdagelsesfelt hvor materiale, struktur, lys og følelse mødes.

Mit arbejde begynder ofte med et enkelt spørgsmål. Hvordan kan et materiale tale på en ny måde. Hvordan kan hårdhed blive intimitet. Hvordan kan præcision skabe følelse. Søgningen ligger i hjertet af alt, hvad jeg skaber.

I TD Fine Art Studio nærmer hvert værk sig som sin egen verden, med sin egen logik, atmosfære og visuel identitet. Nogle værker bygges gennem rytme, gentagelse og struktur. Andre møder virkeligheden gennem fravær, skygge, refleksion eller spænding. Det, der binder dem sammen, er en fælles bestræbelse på originalitet, tydelighed og følelsesmæssig tilstedeværelse.

Jeg fascineres af kontrast. Mellem styrke og skrøbelighed. Mellem kontrol og følelse. Mellem hvad der er synligt og hvad der står åbent for fortolkning. Mit mål er ikke blot at lave et billede, men at skabe et værk der fastholder opmærksomhed, inviterer til refleksion og fortsætter med at afsløre sig over tid.

TD Fine Art Studio er rummet hvor disse udforskninger samles. Det er ikke kun et atelier, men et udviklende kunstnerisk univers formet af nysgerrighed, præcision og ambitionen om at skabe værk der føles særligt, intentionelt og levende.
