Takaoka Copperware (高岡銅器) Vase with Twin Dragon-Head Handles and Phoenix Motif, Zuiho
This Takaoka Copperware vase is the work of Zuiho (瑞峰). The two handles are formed as finely detailed dragon heads (龍), and the body bears a raised relief (レリーフ) of two phoenixes (鳳凰). At the center between the phoenixes is a hollyhock (葵) relief. The reddish base tone is complemented by a verdigris-toned (緑青調) coloring, giving the piece a substantial, weighty presence.
Takaoka Copperware carries a tradition of roughly 400 years originating in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, and was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1975.
