66. ACCA MS-70, Japan Showa 58 (1983) Osaka Castle 400th Anniversary Large Bronze Medal, Tenshukaku / Mint Made:
The Tenshukaku is the top tower and roof section of a Japanese-style castle, visually the most striking part, serving functions of lookout and command. In traditional Japanese culture, the Tenshu also symbolizes feudal authority, representing the owner's strong military power.
During the Edo period, the Tenshukaku was rarely used as living space. Castle lords usually handled political affairs and daily life in the palaces built in the Honmaru, Ninomaru, and Sannomaru areas, while the Tenshu was mainly used for storage. In the early Edo period, people sometimes avoided calling castle towers "Tenshu" in reports to the Tokugawa shogunate. Nowadays, these symbolic towers are collectively referred to as Tenshu structures. By the late Azuchi-Momoyama period, the Tenshu was positioned as the last line of defense and was often built in the Honmaru, surrounded by walls.
This bronze medal commemorates the castle's construction and is extremely exquisite and beautiful, especially the stunning Tenshukaku. Collectors definitely shouldn't miss it.
