Beskrivelse fra sælger
Sculpture Prampram, Southern Region, Ghana, incl stand.
This anthropomorphic wooden figure, Prampram, is characterized by a sculptural design of remarkable formal economy: the body, narrow and almost monolithic, rises vertically between two short, tapered legs, while long, tapered arms remain pressed against the sides; a cylindrical, sharply defined neck supports an oversized, nearly spherical head, whose face is reduced to a few basic features—a vertical nasal ridge, small perforations, and a circular cavity on the side—to the point that any distinct facial features give way to an abstract presence. The surface of the wood retains an irregular brown-gray patina beneath which significant traces of reddish-orange pigment are visible, along with cracks, holes, and signs of wear that bear witness to the object’s material history; some perforations, clearly ancient, may once have held elements that are now missing. From an anthropological perspective, the attribution to Prampram situates the work within the cultural context of the Dangme people of Ghana’s eastern coast, a region historically integrated into major networks of coastal trade and intercultural exchange. The deliberate disproportion of the head, the frontal orientation, the reduction of the limbs, and the almost total absence of naturalistic features thus invite us to view this sculpture not as a portrait in the Western sense, but as a condensed representation of the person, whose visual impact rests on simplification, verticality, and physical presence.
"A great discovery were the so called "PramPram" sculptures, which are stylistically related to the Northern part of the small tribes in Northern Ghana and Togo, in particular the Moba. In my interview Baba Sylla, Accra, Ghana, isn't speaking about a "tribe“, he named it "a great family", which seems to be incorrect under anthropological aspects, but it is a link to the fact, how small this "tribe" is or was in reality. May be this is the reason that these sculptures are unknown in literature. Only Karl-Heinz Krieg (short before his death) conducted unpublished researches with voice protocols close to the hut, where these sculptures were once part of a shrine. But a friend of him told me that Mr. Krieg had no possibility to access the hut."
