Historical Context:
The quarter anna belonged to British India’s pre-decimal monetary system, in which 16 annas equalled one rupee, making this denomination equal to 1/64 of a rupee. George V’s title KING EMPEROR reflects his position as both King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India. Calcutta issues of this type are distinguished by the absence of a dot below the date, whereas Bombay issues normally bear a dot. The year 1929 was politically significant in Indian history, as the Indian National Congress adopted Purna Swaraj, or complete independence, as its objective at the Lahore session in December. This coin was therefore struck during an important period in the transition from British imperial rule toward the movement that ultimately resulted in Indian independence.
