This piece pays direct homage to two of the most important figures in 20th-century abstract and avant-garde art, whose aesthetics Paolozzi intertwines in his own pop and geometric style: the Dutch painter Karel Appel (co-founder of the CoBrA movement) and the American sculptor Alexander Calder (pioneer of kinetic sculpture).
Paolozzi was one of the pioneers and founders of British Pop Art. He was the first to introduce elements of American mass culture and advertising into modern art. He co-founded the Independent Group in London during the 1950s, a collective that challenged the boundaries of traditional art by merging technology, mass consumption, and popular culture. He is one of the giants of contemporary art.
