The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the coin of Licinius II from N.N. in Wijchen, the Netherlands.

The previous owner, N.N. of Wijchen, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s.

According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands since before 1990.

Background Information:
This bronze coin was issued for Licinius II, son of the emperor Licinius I, who was elevated to the rank of Caesar in A.D. 317 and remained Caesar until A.D. 324. The obverse depicts the young Licinius II in ceremonial imperial dress, facing left. The legend reads D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C, identifying him as Valerius Licinianus Licinius and Nobilissimus Caesar.

The reverse bears the legend PROVIDENTIAE CAESS and depicts a fortified Roman camp gate or defensive structure, represented with masonry courses, an open entrance and towers above. Such architectural imagery formed part of the political language of Late Roman coinage, evoking military security, imperial preparedness and the protection of the Roman state.

Bronze coinage of this period was produced in enormous quantities at imperial mints and circulated widely throughout the Roman Empire. Coins therefore served not only as everyday currency but also as an effective means of communicating the portraits, titles and political messages of the imperial house to soldiers, merchants and civilians across distant provinces.
