‘PARO’ is an abstract portrait built through a dense interplay of colour. At close range, the individual colours dominate the composition; as the viewing distance increases, the facial features and expression gradually emerge.
The work belongs to a body of portraits in which each title was deliberately chosen only after the composition was completed, based on the emotional response evoked by the expression that emerged.
The title ‘PARO’ carries a specific reference, offering an additional layer to those who choose to explore it.
Viewed from an angle, the adjacent faces of the Rubik’s Cubes reveal the physical construction of the work and extend the composition beyond the frontal image.
Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His installations are permanently exhibited at the Rossini National Museum in Italy and at Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel at Disneyland Paris.
