Lesbos, Mytilene.
500-450 f.Kr.
1/24 Stater (Billon, 6.95 mm, 0.53 g).

In the 5th century BC, Lesbos was a prosperous Greek island dominated by the cities of Mytilene and Methymna. After the Persian Wars it joined the Athenian-led Delian League. Mytilene revolted against Athens in 428 BC but was defeated the following year, losing much of its political autonomy. During the Peloponnesian War, control of the island shifted between Athenian, Spartan and Persian influence, reflecting its strategic position in the eastern Aegean.
