Caliph al-Radi (934-940 AD), the twentieth Abbasid caliph, is traditionally regarded as the last caliph to exercise real political authority and to preside personally over the Friday sermon. Facing an empty treasury and fragmenting provinces, he created the office of amir al-umara (commander of commanders) in 936 AD, effectively ceding power to military strongmen and marking the end of direct caliphal rule.
