Obv: لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له — “There is no god but Allah alone; He has no partner”; with سيف الدولة / أبو الحسن — “Sayf al-Dawla / Abu al-Hasan.” Kufic inscriptions in horizontal lines; mint-and-date formula around, with an additional outer religious legend on some varieties.
Rev: محمد رسول الله — “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”; with the reigning Abbasid caliph’s name and ناصر الدولة / أبومحمد — “Nasir al-Dawla / Abu Muhammad.” Kufic inscriptions in horizontal lines; Qur’anic legend around. Arrangement, supplementary inscriptions and ornaments vary by issue.

The Hamdanid brothers established powerful Arab principalities in northern Mesopotamia and Syria during the decline of Abbasid central authority. Nasir al-Dawla ruled from Mosul, while Sayf al-Dawla made Aleppo the centre of a celebrated court and led repeated campaigns against the Byzantine Empire. Their rule marked the emergence of a major regional dynasty in al-Jazira and northern Syria.
