An original silkscreen by internationally recognised Japanese artist Ay-O (靉嘔), one of the best-known Japanese artists associated with the international Fluxus movement and widely known as the “Rainbow Artist.” His use of the visible colour spectrum became one of the defining elements of his work from the 1960s onward.

Created in 1976, this work depicts a frontal peacock with its tail fully displayed. The bird and surrounding composition are constructed from Ay-O’s characteristic spectrum of intense reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues and violets.

The composition is especially representative of Ay-O’s mature rainbow period, transforming the natural form of a peacock into a highly structured field of repeated colour and geometric rhythm.

The lower margin is numbered 5/200, signed “Ay-O” in pencil, and dated ’76. A blindstamp is also present in the lower-right area.

The work is recorded as No.310 in Ay-O Complete Print Works / 靉嘔版画全作品集 1954–1982, edited by Sadajiro Kubo, and was issued by Nomura Multiple Art Edition.

Ay-O worked extensively in silkscreen, and screenprinting became particularly well suited to the intense flat colour fields and spectrum effects for which he became internationally recognised. The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo also records signed and numbered Ay-O silkscreens in its collection.

Condition

Good vintage condition.

The printed image itself retains strong and vivid colours and presents very well.

There is age-related toning to the margins and reverse, together with some light staining and minor surface dirt, particularly on the reverse.

Pieces of old tape remain attached near the edges of the reverse.

No major damage to the printed image is apparent from the photographs.

Please carefully examine all original photographs, including the margins, signature, edition number, blindstamp and reverse, as they form an important part of the condition description.
