Beskrivelse fra sælger
John Doe V is an intimate figurative study by Italian artist Raffaele Palmieri, executed in oil on cotton sheet in 2024. The composition presents a solitary nude figure leaning forward in a deeply contracted, almost sculptural pose. The body is shown from the side and partially obscured by its own position, creating a composition that focuses less on portraiture and more on gesture, weight and the physical presence of the human form.
Palmieri uses a restrained palette dominated by olive green, moss, muted grey and earthy flesh tones. The figure emerges gradually from the surrounding darkness, with broad, expressive passages of paint defining the shoulders, back, arms and legs. The visible texture of the brushwork and the occasional heavier application of pigment give the surface a tactile quality, while areas of thinner paint allow the underlying ground to remain perceptible.
The unusual pose gives the work a quiet sense of tension. Rather than presenting the nude as a traditional idealised figure, Palmieri captures a fleeting and unguarded moment, with the body folded into the surrounding space. The dark green environment almost absorbs the figure, creating a close relationship between the human form and its setting.
The John Doe works are characterised by their anonymous titles, placing emphasis on the figure itself rather than a specific identity or narrative. In John Doe V, this anonymity is particularly effective: the identity of the sitter becomes secondary to the physical language of the pose, the subdued atmosphere and the painterly handling of the oil.
The work is presented in a black wooden frame with a white mount, providing a simple, contemporary presentation that contrasts with the earthy and atmospheric character of the painting.

Originally trained in architecture and interior design, Palmieri brings a unique sensitivity to painting, where structure gives way to intuition. Working exclusively in oil, he builds and disrupts his surfaces with natural pigments, revealing hidden layers that mirror the complexity of memory, identity and the subconscious.
Entirely self taught, his work quickly attracted critical attention, culminating in his selection for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters Annual Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London just eight months after beginning his painting practice.
His portraits occupy a compelling space between observation and psychological enquiry, where each brushstroke becomes part of an evolving conversation between material, emotion and the human condition.
