Beskrivelse fra sælger
Ewe Venavi-figurine – Ho Region, Ghana
Carved from light-colored wood, this male figure stands calmly frontally with slightly splayed legs. The powerful torso, the block-like shape of the hips, and the comparatively large head lend it an almost portrait-like presence. One arm hangs down at his side, while the other hand rests on his stomach; a hole in the hand may once have held an attribute. Black shoes and hair contrast with the warm wood tone. Large, white-accented eyes and finely sculpted features enhance the individualized expression. Wear and a softly lustrous patina attest to repeated handling.
The Ho Region in Ghana's Volta Region is part of the western settlement area of the Ewe people. There, and in neighboring Togo, wooden surrogate figures for deceased twins are known as venavi. They were not merely memorial images but could be cared for, washed, clothed, and looked after like living family members. Characteristic features often include an upright posture, light-colored wood, and partially blackened hairstyles or feet. Doro theum: The strikingly modern appearance of the man in question simultaneously illustrates that venavi are not static representations, but rather mutable embodiments of social memory.
