About the painting:
Massive dark peaks streaked with brown and rust rise above a still turquoise lake, their ridges capped with fresh blue-white snow. In the foreground a golden larch and warm yellow and orange grasses glow against the cool water, while a soft yellow and grey sky closes the scene. The painting conveys the scale, silence and drama of high mountain country.
This work shows Tatyana Derdey’s confident command of impasto. Thick, sculptural strokes of paint, laid on with the palette knife, build the rock faces into angular, richly textured planes, and the raised ridges of white and pale blue paint catch the light like snow. The smooth, glassy lake is a deliberate contrast to the heavy surface of the mountains. Deep browns, charcoal and rust are set against icy turquoise and a burst of golden yellow, and this strong play of warm and cool tones gives the composition power, depth and atmosphere.
A distinctive piece for collectors of impasto art, mountain landscapes, lake scenes, palette knife painting and expressive contemporary art.
About the artist:
For Tatyana Derdey, painting is a way of preserving the beauty of nature exactly as she feels it. She works in the academic style because it allows her to stay true to the landscape: to its light, mood, harmony and quiet perfection. Her goal is not to change nature, but to capture it with sincerity and care.
In her own words: “I work in the academic manner because this is how I see and feel the landscape. I am drawn to revealing the beauty of nature as it truly exists, without altering it, because it is already perfect in its own way.” She grew up surrounded by landscape painters who worked in the academic tradition, in a place of remarkable natural beauty where she never felt the need to change anything, only to capture and convey it. She sees herself among the artists who strive to reflect nature truthfully and objectively.
Education: 2003–2008, graduated from the M.B. Grekov Odessa Art College, Painting Department, in T.I. Egorova’s workshop.
