Background Information:

This bronze finger ring is characterised by its plain hoop decorated with a subtle twisted or rope-like design created by alternating diagonal grooves. Unlike signet rings or gemstone-set examples, this type relied on the elegance of its form and the play of light across the faceted decoration rather than elaborate iconography.

Bronze rings of this kind were widely worn throughout the Roman Empire by men and women as everyday personal ornaments. Twisted and faceted bands were a popular decorative style, imitating the appearance of twisted wire while remaining strong and economical to produce. Such rings could be worn alone or together with other jewellery and were suitable for daily use.

The ring was cast in bronze and carefully finished by hand, with the decorative grooves cut after casting to produce the characteristic twisted effect. Comparable examples have been recovered from settlements, military forts, villas, and cemeteries across Britain, Gaul, Germania, and other Roman provinces, demonstrating the widespread popularity of this simple yet refined design.

Dating to the 2nd–3rd century A.D., the ring belongs to the Middle Roman Imperial period, when bronze jewellery was produced in specialised workshops and distributed through extensive trade networks across the Empire. Its restrained decoration reflects the practical elegance typical of Roman personal adornment.

This piece provides a direct and tangible connection to the ancient Roman world, where rings of this kind formed part of everyday life and illustrate the enduring craftsmanship of Roman bronze jewellery.

Note: Although the supplied title refers to a "Stylised Vulva" ring, the photographed object does not display such a motif. It is more accurately described as a plain bronze finger ring with a twisted decorative hoop.
