The story behind "As de Oros"

Everyone who has played cards in Spain knows her. On the ace of coins, the As de Oros of the classic Spanish deck, a woman looks out from a large golden coin, in profile, with a red band in her hair. It is the highest card of its suit, worth eleven points in a game of brisca or tute. In this painting she has stepped out of the coin. She sits in a green landscape of rolling hills, a blue mountain behind her, rests her hand lightly against her cheek and turns to look straight at us.

And the gold has come with her. It hangs in the trees on both sides: round, golden-orange fruits, ripening on the branches like coins. The colours of the card have followed her too: red, yellow and red flow down from her dress like a ribbon, the colours of Spain. She no longer needs to be printed on a coin. She is the ace now, and the whole sunny landscape around her is her suit.

About the artist

Claus Bertermann holds a Master's degree in Architecture (TU Munich) and is an internationally collected contemporary artist, with more than 1,000 large-format works in private and institutional collections, including a monumental triptych at the Technical University of Munich. His abstract paintings have reached top auction results such as €18,900 at C. h. r. i. s. t. i. e´s Paris and €15,240 at S. o. t. h. e. b. y´s Cologne, with further sales at V. a. n. H. a. m, A. r. t. c. u. r. i. a. l and D. o. r. o. t. h. e. u. m.

In 2026 he started a radically new figurative series: people and scenes in bold, emotional colour, inspired by German Expressionism. First he paints the background with loose, broad brushstrokes. Then he draws the figures on top with oil stick, in clear and confident lines.

Visual description

A young woman sits at the centre of the canvas in a red dress with orange and yellow sleeves, her hair crowned with a loose wreath of green, yellow and orange, one hand raised to her cheek. Around her: green hills, a deep blue mountain on the right, a pale blue sky and trees carrying round, golden fruits. A broad band of red and yellow sweeps down to the lower right. Signed in dark blue oil stick at the lower right.

One detail for those who look twice: the golden fruits are drawn as the same round, coin-like circles as the oros on the playing card. The treasure of the suit is growing on the trees.

Why it is worth the price

A large, museum-scale painting from the first year of a radically new figurative series. With its warm palette, its sunlit landscape and its playful reference to the most famous card of the Spanish deck, it brings real joy and light to a wall. A natural choice for collectors of contemporary figurative painting, for lovers of Spain and its culture, og for anyone looking for a bright, confident centrepiece for a living space.
