DESCRIPTION:
This original work by Ralf Altrieth unfolds a lush universe where figures, sketched characters, signs and abstract forms intersect in an incessant play of lines and colors. Some presences stand out clearly, while others remain half-hidden in the material. The gaze circulates freely, moving from one apparition to another without ever exhausting the richness of the composition.
Between free figuration, instinctive drawing and graphic poetry, the work does not seek to impose a precise reading. It rather lets the imagination establish its own associations.
Through its energy and visual density, it first attracts by its abundance and colors, then holds the viewer’s attention by the multitude of details and presences that gradually reveal themselves.
At the border between drawing and painting, this work testifies to a language deeply personal to Ralf Altrieth: a free and instinctive creation, where gesture, imagination and material meet without ever losing their spontaneity.
CRITIQUE:
"There is a lot of poetry in this painting, as in all the artist’s works. They are populated with narrative codes and fantastic tales. In this sense, the painterly poems of Ralf Altrieth are a pure childish song... But the most astonishing thing manifesting in these paintings is a communicative tenderness for the states of mind of the human being."
— Dr. Friedhelm Häring, museum director and art historian
"His writing by gesture and color describes a world open to new voices and to experiences never attempted. The canvases and works on paper by Ralf Altrieth demonstrate that painting remains a major expression of the contemporary scene."
— Laurent Puech, art historian and curator
