The hippocampus (often called a sea-horse) is a mythological creature shared by Phoenician, Etruscan, Roman and Greek mythology, typically been depicted as having the upper body of a horse with the lower body of a fish. In the Iliad, Homer describes Poseidon, that God of horses and the sea, driving a chariot drawn by these horses emerging from the sea and galloping across the sands.
