【Product details】
This elegant Japanese flower basket for ikebana (the art of flower arrangement) was crafted during the Showa period by the second-generation Heian Chikubisai, also known as Professor Shoichi Ishida. Beautifully woven from natural bamboo, the basket features a bulbous body and a wide, flared mouth. The tall handle is composed of two detachable curved bamboo pieces that fit securely into the body, allowing for compact storage or display versatility.
On the underside of the basket is the carved signature of the artist, affirming its authenticity and origin.
Shoichi Ishida (b. 1934, Osaka) studied under his father, the first-generation Chikubisai. After years of training, he inherited the title of the second-generation master. In 1995, he began teaching at the Kyoto Traditional Crafts School. He was honoured with the Kyoto City Education Merit Award in 1997, recognised as a Master of Kyoto Craftsmanship in 2009, and named a Contemporary Master Craftsman by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2018. He continues to teach as a professor of traditional crafts.
