Bathed in warm afternoon light, this evocative view of Bruges captures the timeless beauty of one of Europe’s most enchanting cities. In Canal Scene in Bruges, Ben Viegers leads us down a quiet canal, past golden-hued gabled houses and under a graceful stone bridge. Reflections ripple gently in the water, echoing the architecture above — and rising subtly in the distance, the unmistakable silhouette of the Belfry of Bruges lends the composition both grandeur and a strong sense of place.
Ben Viegers, born in The Hague in 1886, began his artistic life at an early age, learning practical techniques from his grandfather, a coach builder. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and developed a close friendship with painter Charles Dankmeijer, who helped guide his path toward plein-air painting and an impressionistic sensibility.
While his early work was influenced by the Hague School's subdued tones, Viegers gradually broke away from that tradition. He adopted a warmer, sunlit palette — rich in ochres, oranges, and sky blues — and brought a looser, more expressive brushwork to his urban and rural scenes. His love of natural light and lived-in spaces shines through in this canvas.
During his many travels, Bruges stood out as a recurring muse. The city’s harmonious blend of water, medieval architecture, and soft atmospheric light offered exactly the kind of subject matter that suited Viegers’ style. In this piece, the Belfort, Bruges’ iconic 13th-century bell tower, anchors the composition from afar, giving the scene historical weight and architectural rhythm.
From 1921, Viegers was a member of the prestigious Hague Art Circle, and by the 1930s and ’40s, he was based in Nunspeet, continuing to produce vibrant, light-filled works even through the hardships of World War II. He remained active until his death in 1947, leaving behind a rich legacy of Dutch Impressionist landscapes, townscapes, and interiors.
